BUScienceCenterUPDATEDThe expansion of Boston University’s Charles River Campus continues with the approval of a $140-million Center for Integrated Life Sciences and Engineering.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority last week approved plans to build the nine-story, 136,200-square-foot complex on what is now a parking lot at 610 Commonwealth Ave.

The complex will house research facilities for systems neuroscience, synthetic biology and cognitive neuroimaging. The center will house 430 researchers, postdoctoral students, graduate students and staff.

By bringing together multiple disciplines under one roof, the center will foster collaborative research projects, Boston University senior vice president of operations Gary Nicksa said in an interview earlier this summer.

"There’s really a medical demand for more sophisticated ways of addressing infectious disease, and that requires much more sophisticated ways of diagnosis and treatment," Nicksa said. "We want to bring in the physicians with the scientists and the engineers because it requires all of those skills sets."

The project, part of the BU’s 2013-2023 Institutional Master Plan, is expected to generate approximately $27 million per year in grant activity, according to BU. Designed by Boston-based architectural firm Payette, CILSE will include a new "pocket park" that will serve as a link to the adjacent Morse Auditorium.
