National Development AC Hotel South End 2 (1)

A 200-room hotel on Albany Street in Boston’s South End will be the next phase of the Ink Block project, Newton-based National Development announced Monday.

The AC Hotel By Marriott will occupy the former F.W. Webb and Independent Taxi parcels. Construction will begin this year with completion expected in early 2017. The brand is Marriott’s European-style hotel format designed for urban centers. Elkus Manfredi Architects of Boston is the project architect and Cranshaw Construction is the general contractor.

The first phase of the Ink Block development is nearing completion at the adjacent former Boston Herald property, including a Whole Foods Market that opened in January. Residents have begun moving into 315 apartments built above the supermarket and the condominium phase will open in September.

“The character of the neighborhood and its surroundings are quickly evolving. A new community is emerging that not only reflects the vibe, context and culture of the South End, but is representative of where Boston is going,” National Development Managing Partner Ted Tye said in a statement.

National Development also is partnering with AC Hotels By Marriott on a 152-room hotel at Station Landing in Medford.
