After last June’s tornadoes tore three-quarters of the roof off Monson’s town office building, the Monson Police Department spent a week working exclusively out of its fleet of patrol cars.
Last July, six 12-foot by 60-foot trailers arrived, and the department moved in later that month.
The officers remain in those trailers today.
Monson voters recently approved a measure to borrow $3.4 million to help fund a new police station/town office building to replace the existing structure. The Springfield Republican reported earlier this month that a special election scheduled for June is expected to approve the funding, which includes the authorization of a 15-year debt exclusion.
The proposed building would total 26,000 square feet, compared to 31,000 square feet in the current building.
The project’s total cost is $10.3 million, with $6.9 million paid by insurance.
