The Sri Lakshmi Temple in Ashland has begun a $2 million expansion project.

The first phase of the expansion project will result in an additional 15,000 square feet of space and will include six classrooms, a poojas area, a kitchen and a dining area, according to a statement. The second phase is expected to cost an additional $2 million and would provide another 15,000 square feet of space for major temple events, praakaarams, classrooms and private poojas.

"With the growth of the devotee community and their growing religious, cultural and educational needs, we have outgrown our existing infrastructural facilities," the organization said in a statement. "We need extra space for educational, cultural and religious activities."

The Sri Lakshmi Temple, which sits on 12 acres, has been fundraising for the expansion during the last five years, according to a statement.

Stoughton-based Kalkunte Engineering Corp. will coordinate with India-based Muthiah Sthapathi on this project.
