With one filing for every 718 households, Massachusetts ranked 17th in the nation in August foreclosure filings, according to California-based RealtyTrac’s U.S. Foreclosure Market Report.
That’s a 74.6 percent increase in the filing rate over July and a nearly 11 percent decrease compared to August 2010.
RealtyTrac noted that the "actual increase" in Massachusetts filings "may not be as high due to collection changes or improvements."
Nationally, 228,098 foreclosure filings were made in August, a 7 percent increase from the previous month and a 33 percent decrease from a year prior. One in every 570 housing units was subject to a foreclosure filing during the month.
The top states for foreclosure filings during the month were Nevada, California and Arizona. In Nevada, one in every 118 housing units was subject to a foreclosure filing in August.
