Boston Properties is seeking approval from state officials to build a mixed-use complex above the MBTA’s Back Bay station, with residences, offices and retail space.

The Boston-based development company wants to build a tower and at least one other building atop the Amtrak, commuter rail and subway hub, the Boston Globe reported.

The project would require negotiations with state transportation officials for air rights to build structures above the Massachusetts Turnpike. The project also would include a $25 million renovation of the station with new retail space, utility upgrades and a new façade on Dartmouth Street, the Globe reported. Boston Properties would assume the management duties for the station, which opened in 1987.

The plan calls for a glass-encased retail "arcade" inside the station between Clarendon and Dartmouth streets. The size and height of the new buildings has not been announced.
