The Massachusetts agency that funds school construction and renovation around the state is projecting a $100 million budget shortfall that could stall about 200 projects.
Katherine Craven, executive director of the Massachusetts School Building Authority, told The Boston Globe that if the shortfall isn’t made up, 200 or more projects now in the early planning stages could be in jeopardy, and future projects may be cut back.
She says projects already approved for feasibility studies or for design and budgeting would not be affected.
The shortfall is blamed on a steep decline in sales tax revenues. The authority gets about a penny of every nickel in state sales tax collected. The agency is guaranteed $702 million for the year that ends June 30. (AP)
