Fall River-based BayCoast Bank. formerly Citizens~Union Savings Bank, has made a $50,000 Community Service Grant to support Henry Lord Middle School, in memory of Susan M. Medeiros.

Medeiros, who passed away suddenly on Dec. 7, 2011, had been vice president and treasurer of BayCoast Bank. She also volunteered as a mentor for SMILES, a mentoring program run by Henry Lord’s other major donor, People Inc.  

She was very active in the community. A supporter of Saint Ann’s Hudner Oncology Center, she led the annual Friends of St. Anne’s Hospital Bike Challenge. She also participated in the Pan-Mass Challenge, riding more than 100 miles to raise funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 

Medeiros also established the bank’s Dress Down for Charity program, which continues to raise thousands of dollars each year for various nonprofit groups in the area.

"Sue was always looking for new ways to give back to the community," BayCoast Bank President and CEO Nicholas Christ said in a statement. "She had a passion for helping others and a special fondness for programs that help local students succeed. BayCoast is honored to award this Community Service Grant to Henry Lord Middle School in her name."

BayCoast Bank and People Inc. will each donate $50,000 to Henry Lord, with Bristol Community College contributing an additional $32,000. The funds will assist the school as it transitions into a pre-kindergarten to eighth-grade model and allow for the creation of a community center within the school that will be staffed by People Inc.
