Pittsfield-based Berkshire Bank’s two charitable foundations awarded $1.3 million in grants to nonprofit organizations in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Vermont during 2012 – a 5 percent increase in charitable donations from 2011. 

Peter J. Lafayette, executive director of Berkshire Bank Foundation Inc. and Berkshire Bank Foundation – Legacy Region, said in a statement, "Berkshire Bank is excited to give back to the community in a significant way this year through our charitable grants and volunteer efforts. The growth of the bank has allowed us to provide an increase in critical financial assistance to hundreds of nonprofit organizations meeting important needs in our communities."

Berkshire Bank Foundation Inc. funds programs in Berkshire County, the Pioneer Valley, Connecticut, New York and Vermont. Funding from Berkshire Bank Foundation – Legacy Region is dedicated to Berkshire County only. While the two foundation’s priorities are education and community/economic development projects, they also donate to youth, cultural and human service organizations. More than 320 organizations received funding from the two Foundations this past year.
