The Berkshires’ largest provider of mental health and substance abuse services has purchased a former Roman Catholic church in Pittsfield closed by the Springfield Diocese two years ago.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that The Brien Center, which paid more than $877,000 for the Mount Carmel Church, plans to renovate the church property and relocate four programs, including a children’s health initiative and the adult day health program, to the property by the spring.

The nonprofit’s administrative offices, information technology and human resources department will also be relocated.

The purchase includes the rectory, parish hall, school and convent.

Construction is expected to start within weeks.

The Brien Center provides services at more than 30 locations. (AP)
