Boston Bruins captain and all-star defenseman Zdeno Chara and his wife, Tatiana, have purchased a two-bedroom, two-bath loft condo in Boston’s North End for $1.05 million.
The corner unit at Union Wharf, located at 343 Commercial St., features custom stonework, a wood-burning fireplace, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, a private balcony with harbor views and a deeded parking space, according to an online property listing from CL Waterfront Properties.
The Charas purchased the 1,344-square-foot unit from Joseph C. Hayward, according to data obtained from The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman. Hayward purchased the unit in 2002 for $595,000. It was renovated in 2008, according to The Warren Group. The property was assessed this year at $806,400.
No mortgage was recorded with the most recent sale.
Slovakian-born Chara, at 6 feet 9 inches, is the tallest player to lace up in the history of the National Hockey League. He signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Bruins in 2006. Last year, he inked a seven-year, $45.5 million contract extension with the team that will take "Big Z," as he’s affectionately known, through his 40th birthday.
In addition to being the league’s tallest player, Chara also holds the distinction of having the league’s fastest slap shot, clocked at 105.9 miles per hour. He won the Norris trophy in 2009, given annually to the league’s top performing defenseman, and has been named an all-star five times.
Last season, Chara helped the Bruins win the team’s sixth Stanley Cup title, and first since 1972.
