Real estate firms and major contractors from the area will blitz Rosie’s Place, a homeless women’s shelter in Boston’s South End, tomorrow to completely renovate the kitchen and eating area that feeds the city’s destitute daily.

Instead of competing for jobs, representatives and laborers from more than 40 construction companies, suppliers and subcontractors will work together and donate their time, materials and funds to gut and rebuild the outdated facilities at 889 Harrison Ave.

The effort is headed by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Massachusetts as this year’s community service project. The group looked at several charities to help, but in the end found Rosie’s Place to be the best fit.

"Their mission certainly looked like something that we could help with," said Robert Petrucelli, AGC’s president and CEO. "Certainly there are plenty of facilities that could use renovations, but when our leaders met with them there was really good chemistry, and the logistics of where it’s located, the ability to get materials there, and their timetable all seemed to match ours."

Office workers from the various real estate companies will also donate their time to help paint, as well as pass out lunches to the women in the shelter since the eating area and kitchen will be closed.

"The reduction in construction projects has created a hyper-competitive market, especially among construction managers and general contractors pricing and overseeing the work," according to a statement from AGC. "The ability of those competing fiercely with each other for new work to set aside the competition and collaborate on a community service initiative is a sign of the underlying respect these Boston-area companies have for each other."
