For rent signBoston can lay claim to being home to five out of 50 of the largest apartment owners in the country, with two companies ranking in the top five, according to the National Multi Housing Council’s (NMHC) annual ranking.

Boston Capital was ranked No. 1 with 158,947 units owned. Boston Financial Investment Management LP was ranked third with 145,454 units owned.

Ranking lower on the list were Berkshire Property Advisors at No. 45 with 27,906 units owned. AEW Capital Management L.P. ranked No. 46 with 27,556 units owned and GID Investment Advisers LLC snagged No. 50 with 25,002 units owned.

Boston also ranked in top 50 for NMHC’s largest apartment managers in the nation. WinnCompanies came in seventh with 84,817 units managed and Berkshire Property Advisors ranked No. 50 with 28,085 units managed.

NMHC’s ranking found more affordable housing providers topped its list, with four out of its top five largest apartment owners being providers, Boston Capital and Boston Financial Investment Management included.
