Boston’s narrow streets and lack of grid system may make drivers crazy, but the city is a haven for pedestrians, according to a neighborhood information website.

Walk Score, which was purchased by Redfin last year, has named Boston the No. 3 most walkable city in the country, with a walkabilty score of 79.5 out of 100. That puts the city behind only New York City, which earned a score of 87.6, and San Francisco, which scored at 83.9.

Philadelphia and Miami rounded out the list’s top five, with scores of 76.5 and 75.6, respectively.

The rankings are based on a proprietary algorithm and analysis of over 10 million addresses and over 2 billion walking routes to neighborhood amenities across 2,500 cities and more than 10,000 neighborhoods.

“Being able to walk out your door and be at your destination – whether that be your job, school, park, grocery store or restaurant – is great for your wallet, health and quality of life,” Walk Score CEO Josh Herst said in a statement. “For decades, Americans have tended to drive more every year, but that’s changing. Today commuting by bus, bike and foot are on the rise as more people choose apartments and homes in walkable neighborhoods and with shorter, cheaper and happier commutes.”
