The tandem parking spaces. Two tandem parking spaces in Boston’s Back Bay were auctioned by the IRS for a record-setting $560,000 on Thursday.

The spaces were seized by the agency to settle an unpaid tax bill of nearly $1 million and belonged to the owner of one of the units of a condo at 298 Commonwealth Ave. The parking spaces are behind the building, off Public Alley 431.

The minimum bid set by the agency was a mere $42,000, based on assessor’s records of the value of the space. But recent sales of scarce street parking in Boston’s tonier neighborhoods have been considerably more than that, with the sale of a single spot at 42 Commonwealth Ave. going for $300,000 in 2009.
