Homes in the Bay State are among the most expensive in the country, according to a recent study comparing 2,200-square-foot, four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath homes nationwide.
The 2009 Coldwell Banker Home Price Comparison Index (HPCI), which also includes homes in Puerto Rico, Canada and other territories, found a price gap of more than $2 million between the most expensive and affordable housing markets nationwide.
Homes in Boston average $1,337,578, making the Hub one of the more expensive markets in the nation. Boston compares to the average price of homes in San Francisco, Calif., at an average price of $1,363,250.
Boston is also similar in price to Hamilton, Bermuda, where a comparable 2,200-square-foot home costs $1,348,813, the study found.
In the annual comparison of similar 2,200-square-foot homes in 310 markets, La Jolla, Calif., led the list as the most expensive real estate market in the country with an average home price of $2,125,000.
Grayling, Mich., also known as the "canoe capital of the world," ranked as the most affordable market in America, where a similarly sized home costs $112,675.
Homes in Greenwich, Conn. average $1,519,250, making the city just north of New York City one of the most expensive markets in the nation.
Greenwich compares to the average price of homes in Palo Alto, Calif. at a price of $1,489,726 and Santa Monica, Calif. at $1,460,912. Greenwich is also similar in price to Florence, Italy, where a comparable 2,200 square foot home costs $1,612,224.
