Boston is looking for a new director for the agency that test-pilots new housing models in Mayor Michelle Wu’s reorganized Office of Housing.

Taylor Cain, director of the Housing Innovation Lab since 2019, has left the position, Mayor’s Office of Housing spokesman Alexander Sturke confirmed.

The city is advertising a new director who will also serve as assistant director of the Office of Housing, previously known as the Department of Neighborhood Development. The job posting lists a salary range of $75,085 to $106,871, and seeks candidates with at least four years of experience in development, housing policy or real estate.

Cain was hired to lead the housing lab in 2019. Founded in 2015, the agency has piloted programs designed to diversify and increase Boston’s housing stock at public and private properties, including expanded use of in-law apartments, compact living units and housing development on city-owned properties such as library branches.

Wu has made housing policy a centerpiece of her administration’s early initiatives, including an audit of all city-owned properties to find housing development opportunities, proposed increases to the city’s inclusionary development policy and appointing an advisory group on her proposal for rent stabilization.

The Mayor’s Office of Housing currently lists openings for nine positions, including a deputy director in the Office of Housing Stability.
