Mayor Thomas Menino today announced 116 residents signed contracts to install solar projects through Solarize Mass-Boston, which will more than double residential solar projects in Boston.
The four-month program, which concluded on Nov. 4, was a partnership between the city of Boston, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources to make solar more accessible and affordable for Boston homeowners. The 116 contracts will result in 522 kilowatts of clean, renewable energy, with 41 contracts signed in the last week alone.
"Solarize Mass-Boston was an outstanding success and helped increase Bostonians’ access to the clean energy revolution," said Menino in a statement. "We’ll build on this success and continue to develop programs to help residents and businesses green their energy usage while reducing costs."
The four-month program was designed to increase the adoption of solar energy and reduce its cost, by offering residents and businesses discounted pricing for solar. The more people signed up, the more prices dropped. Menino is installing solar on his home in Hyde Park though the program.
Solarize Mass, which was available in 17 Massachusetts communities including Boston in 2012, offered five tiers of discounted pricing based on the total solar capacity contracted under the program.
