The city of Boston is releasing a request for proposals (RFP) for Boston’s first ever infrared scan, which will allow the city to identify heat loss from buildings.

The cost savings measure is expected to save residents and businesses millions of dollars. The scan will provide the city with the necessary data to enhance awareness of the loss and drive greater adoption and enrollment in existing utility-sponsored energy efficiency programs.

Participation in these programs is essential in order to meet the city’s aggressive greenhouse gas reduction goals. Once conducted, Boston will become the first large American city to complete an infrared scan, according to a statement from Boston Mayor Thomas Menino’s office.
