The city of Brockton on Wednesday held a tour and public meeting in coalition with MassDevelopment as part of a revitalization effort for Brockton Gateway Transformative Development Initiative (TDI).

TDI worked with city officials at the event to create a working development plan for the area. The city aims to transform the district into a transit-oriented, walkable neighborhood with shops, restaurants, offices and residences.

MassDevelopment chose the Brockton area in 2014. The district extends from the MBTA commuter rail station to Main Street and down Main to the proposed higher education collaborative campus at Belmont Street.

“We’re thrilled to be involved in Brockton and continue the economic development opportunities here,” MassDevelopment Vice President of Planning and Development Claire O’Neill said in a statement. “TDI is very much a community engagement program, and activating this program will build on the good work of the mayor, his staff, and the city’s public-private partnership.”

City officials are planning focus groups with area businesses, residents, developers and city agencies; a community workshop; and the development of an economic development strategy. Stantec, a consulting team assigned to the project, plans to have a draft strategy ready for public input in September. Another consulting firm, A.G. Jennings, will also work on the initiative.
