Harold Brown, chairman and CEO of The Hamilton Co. in Boston, has been honored by the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) with its lifetime achievement award.

The award was presented at the organization’s recent annual dinner.

Brown has been an industry leader for more than six decades. In 2009, Hamilton Co. made the largest multifamily purchase in the United States, paying $129.5 million for the 409-unit Dexter Park complex in Brookline. Over the past three years, Hamilton has spent about $280 million on acquisitions and development in the Boston metro area, IREM said in a statement.

Currently, Hamilton Co. is constructing the only multifamily building with all moderately priced apartments (8 Winter St.) in Boston’s Downtown Crossing. Another current project is a new 35-unit apartment building at 1085 Boylston St.
