Boston University is hoping to construct two new buildings totaling 445,000 square feet on its campus in coming years, along with adding 50,000 square feet to an existing facility, according to a recent filing with the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA).

The college recently alerted the BRA, the agency responsible for guiding development in the city, to projects it expects to list in its Institutional Master Plan (IMP). That document, which it needs to file this year, will outline BU’s plans for the next decade.

A new, 280,000-square-foot academic building is proposed for 645-665 Commonwealth Ave. The site at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Granby Street has been identified as a potential development site since the school’s first Master Plan was approved in 1987. BU acquired the parcel in 2003. It is currently a public surface parking lot. According to the IMPNF, new academic space is proposed for the site which could be developed as either a one- or two-phase project and stand at 11 stories. The size of the parcel suggests that below grade parking could be considered as well.

A second new building is slated for 30-38 Cummington St. The proposed science and engineering research building would be 165,000 square feet, also 11 stories in height. It would replace what is now a 38,000-square-foot building.

The school also hopes to add 50,000 square feet of space to an existing 84,000-square-foot academic property at 640 Comm Ave.
