Plymouth & Brockton Street Railway Co. (P&B) last week announced plans to launch a new route between Plymouth and Providence, R.I., starting July 14.
The route will run daily, with the first bus leaving Plymouth’s Memorial Hall at 9 a.m. and arriving in Providence at 10:30 a.m. The route begins at Memorial Hall, and stops at Park & Ride at Exit 5 in Plymouth, the Leona Drive Rotary/Campanelli Business Park in Middleboro, the Park & Ride at the Galleria Mall in Taunton, the Park & Ride at the Slades Ferry Avenue Somerset and Kennedy Plaza in Providence.
A return bus leaves Providence at 11 a.m. and arrives in Plymouth at 12:30 p.m. A second round-trip leaves Plymouth at 4 p.m. and arrives in Providence at 5:30 p.m., and the final return trip leaves Providence at 6:30 p.m., arriving in Plymouth at 8 p.m.
The route has been in the planning phase for nearly a year, according to Christopher Anzuoni, P&B vice president. As part of the launch, P&B has placed in service a new commuter coach, provided through BusPlus+, funded by a Federal Transit Administration grant that is overseen by MassDOT’s Rail and Transit Division.
Fares for one-way travel from Plymouth to Providence are $16, and $29 for a round-trip. P&B will also offer commuter booklets. Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver as the bus makes its stops.
"As Route 44 becomes more heavily traveled, we have long believed that bus transportation can help people who travel that corridor on a regular or occasional basis," Anzuoni said in a statement. "We have developed a route that we believe hits the major areas between Plymouth and Providence and look forward to serving the public with this new route."
