Karl "Chip" Case and Robert Shiller, creators of the Case-Shiller Home Price Index, are set to speak at the New England Mortgage Bankers Conference in Rhode Island on Friday, in a rare joint public appearance.

Case, a professor of economics emeritus at Wellesley College, and Shiller, professor of economics at Yale University, created the index in the 1980s to track repeat sales of a property over time.

The index enabled analysts to effectively track changes in house prices for the first time, and helped predict the housing price bubble and crash. The pair will discuss whether the housing market has finally emerged from crisis at a breakfast event Friday in Newport. The event requires registration, but is free.
