It was to be the last hurrah of the Community Bank League of New England and a celebration of its merger with the Massachusetts Bankers Association. But the league’s annual convention, which was to take place last Thursday in South Hampton, Bermuda, has been postponed.

No date has been set for a new convention.

According to MBA President Daniel J. Forte, the convention was postponed “to honor the families and the victims of [Sept. 11’s] tragedies. We just felt the right thing to do was to not do it [last] week and try to come up with a more local venue to celebrate the joining of the two associations and to support the local economy,” he said.

Forte said most chief executive officers wanted to be around their staff during these difficult times.

“Everyone’s going through these struggles, trying to resume a normal life when these are not normal times,” he said. “We don’t want terrorism to affect our daily lives, but we didn’t feel it was appropriate to be leaving the country.”

The annual Bank Compliance Academy scheduled for Monday, Sept. 17, in Marlborough also was postponed more out of a “dislocation” issue than anything else, he said.
