A major part of the city of Chelsea’s redevelopment, a new 135,000-square-foot Market Basket supermarket on Everett Avenue, opened its doors this morning.
The store will provide an affordable supermarket option for area residents, and create more than 300 new jobs in the community, according to a statement from the city.
Developed by Retail Management and Development Inc. on behalf of owner DeMoulas Supermarkets Inc., the building features a new exterior and interior café area designed by Architect PCA Inc. It will replace an older store currently standing in an adjacent lot. The new supermarket is nearly double the size of a traditional supermarket and is the largest of its size in New England, according to a statement from the company.
Market Basket Store Manager Kevin Feole, Chelsea City Manager Jay Ash, and other city officials and community leaders were present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Market Basket, headquartered in Tewksbury, has grown over the years from a single-family store to a major New England employer with 60 retail locations.
