China Railway Rolling Stock Corp. has broken ground on its new 220,000-square-foot facility in Springfield, which will be used to manufacture 284 Red and Orange Line subway cars for the MBTA.

The $60 million facility is located on 40 acres of land formerly owned by Westinghouse.

The company purchased the land, which was the site of a failed bid for the construction of a casino, for $12 million.
