Boston’s Christian Science Plaza, a much-used metropolitan oasis with wide vistas and a vast reflecting pool, will be drastically altered by a redevelopment plan featuring three skyscrapers that has been approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA).
Although The First Church of Christ, Scientist will need individual approvals for each building individually, city officials last night approved plans for the tower trifecta. The newly approved zoning changes will ease the approval process while leaving the exact use of the buildings still to be determined..
The church’s proposal includes a 291-foot building to be constructed near the corner of Huntington and Massachusetts Avenues, and two others, one at 512 feet and one at 251 feet on a parcel across from the Hilton and Sheraton hotels on Belvidere Street.
Church officials say they will not know the specific uses and designs of the new buildings until developers are hired, but allowed uses include offices, residences, hotels and retail stores, according to reports.
Church representatives have said the revenue the church will receive from the new developments will help cover property and other operating expenses.
Along with the real estate development, the church will reconstruct the leaking reflecting pool and add a public pavilion near the intersection of Huntington Avenue and Belvidere Street. Church officials also anticipate additional green space, seating and other landscaping.
