Citizens Bank’s Gear for Grades program has donated backpacks filled pencils, pens, folders, notebooks and other items to provide 6,600 children with the school supplies they need.

Gear for Grades was organized in partnership with Cradles to Crayons, a Boston-based nonprofit that supports low-income youth.

"With the rising cost of school supplies, the Gear for Grades program helps to ease the financial strain parents face this time of year as they prepare to send their children back to school," Jerry Sargent, president of Citizens Bank and RBS Citizens, Massachusetts, said in a statement.
