Boston construction firm Commodore Builders has been awarded the build out contract at Education Development Center Inc.’s (EDC) new 120,000-square-foot headquarters in Waltham.

The building will be constructed at CenterPoint, a 23-acre, 500,000-square-foot office/lab/R&D park, just a mile from EDC’s current location. The building is owned by TC Saracen LLC, a joint venture of Saracen Properties and Trammell Crow Co. Acquisition Funds. EDC’s move will occur by November 2011.

EDC is a global nonprofit organization that designs, delivers and evaluates programs in education, health and economic opportunity. EDC also has offices in New York and Washington, D.C.

The new 120,000-square-foot headquarters will house EDC’s 450 area employees. The space is designed with a floor plan that will facilitate staff communication and integration and provide a more sustainable work environment. The new building, a former Raytheon headquarters, is being refurbished to suit EDC’s needs and will feature conference meeting space with audio visual technology. Preconstruction is underway and construction is slated to begin in April 2011.

Diversified Project Management, of Newton, is providing overall project management services. Sasaki Assoc., of Watertown, and Taylor & Burns Architects, of Boston, are providing architecture services. RDK has been selected as the engineers for the project.
