Dear Editor
I’m sure your readers will agree that independent contractors play a vital role in the U.S. economy, creating new jobs and providing services more efficiently and effectively than would be possible under a different structure.
In the midst of the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression, the independent contractor model is creating jobs at a time when they are needed most. Contracting has allowed countless women and men to remain productive and provide for their families, even though established companies are continuing to reduce their workforces.
But their livelihoods – and the livelihoods of anyone choosing independence and financial freedom – are threatened by policies that attempt to roll back their liberties and penalize the businesses they serve. Changing or even eliminating the ability of hardworking Americans to work as independent contractors could lead to such travesties as fewer life-saving doctors in America’s emergency rooms; fewer taxi cabs to catch at the airport or downtown; fewer couriers to deliver packages and medications; fewer financial advisors available to help Americans plan for retirement.
It could also result in higher prices for everyday services due to an increase in the cost of doing business and reduction in competition. The most painful result will be a reduction in the number of new U.S. jobs being created.
Those who have chosen an independent career path, with all its challenges, shouldn’t have even more difficulties foisted upon them by their own governments. We should work to protect the sanctity of the American worker, one who has chosen to pursue independence through self-employment.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Lianne Muldoon
