Crescent Credit Union and Brockton Postal Employees Credit Union will merge at the end of March, pending member and regulatory approvals.
Upon finalization of the merger, the new entity will operate under the Crescent Credit Union name, charter and bylaws.
Crescent President and CEO Robert W. Gustafson said the merger would give both institutions a little bit more competitive advantage in an environment of low interest rates and compressed margins.
The deal would also allow Brockton Postal’s members access to more full-service branches and credit unions.
Presently, Crescent Credit Union operates eight branches in Brockton, Taunton and Norwell, plus about 15 ATMs. Brockton Postal has one branch inside postal facility on Liberty Street in Brockton.
Crescent Credit Union has about 45,000 members and its field of membership is open to anybody living in Plymouth, Bristol, Norfolk or Barnstable counties. Brockton Postal Employees Credit Union has about 1,000 members, all current or retired United States Postal Service or government employees.
Both credit unions are state-chartered and insured by the NCUA to the maximum extent permitted under federal law. Additionally, Crescent Credit Union is insured by the Massachusetts Credit Union Share Insurance Corporation.
As of Dec. 31, Crescent had assets of $401 million and deposits totaling $258 million, and Brockton Postal had assets of $10 million and deposits of $9 million. No date has been set yet for a membership vote on the merger.
