National discount retailer Dollar General Corp. is scheduled to open its first Massachusetts location in Chicopee next month, according to industry sources.

The retailer, whose website boasts 9,800 stores in 38 states, will occupy 11,245 square feet at 1956 Memorial Drive when it opens.

The company is retrofitting a former liquor store in an existing shopping center, sources told Banker & Tradesman. An advertisement for a store manager job is listed on multiple jobseeker websites. All told, the company is looking to open about 20 stores in Western Massachusetts and Connecticut.

"Dollar General is aggressively looking at locations in Western Mass. like Worcester," and places west, the industry executive said. "This is a new territory for them. National retailers are back on the street looking at leasing sites. Discount and convenience stores are the two big ones out in the market."
