ZUMIX, a non-profit youth music organization, is set to open in a former East Boston firehouse later this month.

The 9,000-square-foot, circa-1920s structure, known as the Engine Company 40 Firehouse, was completely gutted to accommodate the renovation. The building at 260 Sumner St. will be LEED certified, and will house offices, a radio station, recording studio, a music production studio, classrooms and performance space for ZUMIX, according to a statement.

The $2 million project is a joint venture renovation project between ZUMIX and the East Boston Community Development Corp.

"We have enjoyed being a part of this exciting project. Once completed over the next few weeks this center will serve as a source of education and entertainment for many young people in East Boston and for the community at large," said William J. Glasser, president/CEO of Landmark Structures, which served as the general contractor for the project.
