Senior citizens living at the 209-unit Genesis House in Brighton have had their affordability extended and will see significant property improvements with the closing of $56.7 million in MassHousing financing.
Genesis House is owned by Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE) and is part of JCHE’s 700-unit supportive housing campus in Brighton. As part of the MassHousing financing, JCHE has extended the federal Section 8 Housing Assistance Payment Contract on 208 apartments for 20 years. One unit is occupied by a property manager.
In addition to MassHousing’s tax-exempt construction and permanent financing, the refinancing and renovation effort is also being financed by the use of low-income housing tax credits, which will ensure affordability at Genesis House for 30 years.
“Genesis House provides affordable, supportive housing for the many low-income seniors who live there and now that affordability has been extended,’’ Timothy C. Sullivan, MassHousing executive director, said in a statement. “Additionally, JCHE is committed to making major property renovations that will allow for even greater services and comfort for the residents there.’’
Located at 28 Wallingford Road in Brighton, Genesis House consists of 189 one-bedroom apartments and 20 two-bedroom apartments. Among the property improvements planned are the replacement of heating and fire alarm systems, new flooring and kitchen appliances in the apartments, new windows and accessibility improvements to existing accessible units and creating additional accessible units.
“We are so appreciative of MassHousing’s support of JCHE and Genesis House,’’ Amy Schectman, JCHE president and CEO, said in a statement. “This renovation will enable us to continue to provide approximately 250 older adults with safe and affordable independent housing where they can live a full life of connection and purpose in a dynamic and supportive environment.’’
