Public meetings will be held in Massachusetts and Connecticut to discuss the next steps for the potential cleanup of the Housatonic River.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the states have been working together for the past few months to discuss possible approaches to clean up the "Rest of River" portion of the Housatonic, which is contaminated with pollutants from General Electric’s former Pittsfield facility.

The meetings are scheduled Wednesday at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, Conn., and Thursday at the Lenox Memorial Middle and High School in Lenox.

Before the meetings, EPA and the states will release a summary document that describes the current status of the efforts to identify potential remedial approaches. The summary report will be the topic of the public meetings.
