A former Middlesex County probate register has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing thousands of dollars from cash and copy machines, and from his campaign funds.
A Woburn Superior Court judge on Wednesday also sentenced John Buonomo to 10 years probation in separate cases by state Attorney General Martha Coakley and Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone.
Last year, the 57-year-old Newton resident was charged with 18 counts of breaking and entering into a depository, eight counts of theft of public property by a county officer and eight counts of larceny under $250.
In March, he was charged with personal use of campaign funds, misleading investigators and larceny over $250 after authorities accused him of stealing more than $100,000 in campaign funds.
Buonomo resigned from his position in September 2008.
