The former director of the Western Mass. Electric Co. Credit Union has been sentenced to four years of probation for embezzling more than $225,000 from the company.

Robert Koss of Ludlow was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Springfield after pleading guilty last year to embezzlement and filing a false tax return.

The Republican of Springfield reports that the judge said if the 68-year-old Koss was younger, he would have received prison time. Koss, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, was also ordered to write a letter of apology and pay restitution.

Prosecutors said starting in 1999 and continuing until his retirement in 2006, Koss collected about $225,000 from fabricated or inflated expense reimbursements.

Koss’ lawyer said most of the money has already been repaid.
