Fidelity Bank held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new 3,700 square-foot Millbury branch Monday.

The project will include extensive renovations to the 4,000 square-foot VFW hall on the site, as well as the creation of Armory Park, to commemorate the site as the location of the historic 1808 Waters Armory in Millbury. The landscaped park will include access from the sidewalk, a granite park bench and an interpretive sign telling about the site.  The site has foundation remnants, sluiceways and stonework for dams.

The new branch office will be an addition to the renovated hall at 16 South Main Street. The architect is Maugel Architects of Harvard and the general contractor is Construction Dynamics of Fitchburg.

"This project illustrates our commitment to the Millbury and Blackstone Valley community, our customers and the VFW," said Edward F. Manzi, Jr., Fidelity Bank’s chairman and CEO, in a statement.

The bank has had offices in Millbury since 1973.
