Boston-based architecture firm Finegold Alexander + Assoc. Inc. has been given with four awards for its transformation of the Salem Jail into a mixed-use development.
The firm received the following awards:
- The National Housing and Rehabilitation Association, J. Timothy Anderson Award
- American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2011 AIA Housing Award – Multifamily Housing
- Massachusetts Historical Commission 2011 Preservation Award
- Historic Salem 2011 Preservation Award
The project restored a three-building historic jail complex and adapted it for residential and mixed use, including a full-service restaurant and an original jail cell preserved to capture the history of the property, according to a statement.
"The recognition that the Salem Jail project continues to receive is the exclamation point on what has been both a challenging and rewarding project," said Jim Alexander, principal, Finegold Alexander + Assoc. "The effort of the team, including the owners, New Boston Ventures, and Metric Construction, was essential to designing a complex that encourages reinvestment in historic structures, as was the support of federal and state agencies that assisted in procuring the necessary historic tax credits."
