AvalonBay Communities will break ground Oct. 27 on Avalon North Station, a 38-story apartment tower located between the TD Garden and Nashua Street. The project was approved by city regulators in 2013. Plans call for 503 apartments in a 636,550-square-foot structure.

The site is next to a two-tower project by TD Garden owners Delaware North Cos. and developer Boston Properties, approved in 2013 by the Boston Redevelopment Authority. The complex also will contain a 306-room hotel, 668,000 square feet of office space, restaurants and retail space including a supermarket. Developers received a $7.8-million, 15-year tax break from the administration of former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

The project joins a busy development pipeline in and around North Station, including the new 187,000-square-foot Converse Inc. headquarters at Lovejoy Wharf, which is scheduled to open next spring. Earlier this month, Woburn-based Somnath Hospitality LLC proposed a 15-story, 90-room hotel at 104 Canal St. in Boston, replacing a one-story former Bank of America branch at the corner of Canal Street and Valenti Way. Redevelopment plans are also in the works for 110 Canal St., which contains the headquarters of CBT Architects and a Boston Beer Works restaurant.
