Francis T. Bresnahan Elementary SchoolFrancis T. Bresnahan Elementary School held a ceremonial groundbreaking to begin construction on the Newburyport elementary school’s new $28 million "model" building.

The Massachusetts School Building Authority’s Model School Program focuses on adapting the design of successful, recently constructed public schools as those schools are efficient in their design, easy to maintain, contain optimal core learning space, accommodate enrollment fluctuations, incorporate sustainable design elements and flexible in educational programming spaces while supporting community use.

When complete, the school will be 112,000 square feet and combine two existing schools, which separately house Newburyport’s Pre-K and grades 1-3, into one building that will share its site with the community’s senior center. The school will be large enough to accommodate 760 students.

Waltham-based CTA Construction is the general contractor for the project and will work with Cambridge-based HMFH Architects to complete the new building. Bresnahan Elementary School is the second model school project for the team.
