Workers gather for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Friendship Home in NorwellOfficials have begun construction for a new facility in Norwell that will offer care for people with developmental disabilities.

Acella Construction of Norwell has been handling preconstruction for the 14,000-square-foot Friendship Home and will continue to provide construction services for the project.

Friendship Home provides respite care and will include office space and an activity center for people with developmental disabilities to participate in day or evening activities. Members of Friendship Home can stay in the residence hall for up to two weeks, according to a statement.

Construction will be completed in the spring. The project was designed by Norwell’s David H. Dunlap Associates.
