Hammond Residential Real Estate will consolidate two of its Boston offices into a new location in January.
The former Beacon Hill office at 75 Charles St., and the Back Bay location at 29 Commonwealth Ave., will move to new digs above a Starbucks at 66 Beacon St. About 25 of the company’s roughly 60 Boston agents will be affected by the move. Hammond also has offices in Charlestown and the South End. Hammond had been at the same Back Bay location for more than 20 years.
The move reflects changes both in the industry as a whole and in the Boston real estate market, Senior Vice President and Boston-area Manager David Stenberg told Banker & Tradesman.
"With all the changes in the industry and the Internet and communications…it just doesn’t make as much sense these days to put as much money into the brick and mortar," said Stenberg. "Some companies are going to virtual offices. I don’t know that Boston’s quite ready for that. We’re not. But the agents are spending less and less time in the office – they have everything in their hand. So we can function with less space but better visibility."
The new Beacon Street location will allow agents to serve both the Back Bay and Beacon Hill, he said. The move also reflects the increasing importance of neighborhoods like Dorchester, South Boston and the Seaport to Hammond’s business. The South End office was expanded two months ago, in part to help provide more service to those areas.
"The market in Boston is really expanding," Stenberg said. "I can’t call them primary markets, but they’re certainly very strong secondary markets for us."
