Mark Schwartz, active on the boards of Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT and Harvard, will return to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. as vice chairman of the firm and chairman of Goldman Sachs Asia Pacific.
Schwartz will be based in Beijing, and takes over for J. Michael Evans, who will be based in New York as vice chairman of the firm and global head of growth markets.
Schwartz was president of Goldman Sachs Japan from 1997 to 2001 and chairman of Goldman Sachs Asia from 1999 to 2001. He began his career at Goldman in 1979. He founded his own firm, Norwalk, Conn.-based MissionPoint Capital Partners, in 2006.
Schwartz serves on the board of trustees at Mass. General, MIT and Harvard. His philanthropy at Mass. General and Harvard has focused on global health issues and biomedical research with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis in southern Africa.
