New England car dealership magnate Herb Chambers has sold his opulent and historic Back Bay mansion for $8.75 million.
The roughly 9,000-square-foot, five-bedroom, five-bathroom home at 128 Commonwealth Ave. was originally priced at $9.5 million, according to an online listing from Bushari Group Real Estate. It also features three half baths.
Originally constructed in the 1890s as a single family home, the property was subdivided into three condominium units in the late 1980s, according to Boston architecture website bosarchitecture.com. Chambers purchased all three units in 2004 for $8.65 million, according to data obtained from The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman. He converted the property back into a single family home and it underwent significant renovation in 2006, according to The Warren Group, including the addition of an interior garage.
The property was sold to Philip J. Dubuque on Jan. 26.
The Herb Chambers Auto Group currently operates 44 car dealerships throughout New England, including a number of high-end dealerships selling the likes of Bentley, Rolls Royce, Porsche, and Maybach. According to Chambers’ Wikipedia page, he got his start in the 1980s by purchasing a Connecticut Cadillac dealership after a poor buying experience there.
Chambers’ private collection includes a number of exotic and rare automobiles, including a 1932 Ford Model B and a 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL raced in the 1983 Cannonball Run race across America.
No word on whether he kept any of his pricey exotics at his now former Commonwealth Avenue address.
