Shawmut Design and Construction has begun restoration of the Abbot and 18 Brattle St. buildings in Cambridge’s Harvard Square and construction of a 4-story infill building to create 60,000 square feet of updated mixed-use space.

Originally built in 1909 by developer Edwin H. Abbot, the Abbot building was the first Georgian Revival-style commercial building in Harvard Square and set the tone for future development.

The project includes facade restoration, interior improvements to retail and office space, restoration of a brick walkway on Brattle Street and construction of a green roof deck.

Cambridge-based Prellwitz Chilinski Assoc. designed the third building to be compatible in design and materials with the existing structures.
