The Residences at Brighton Marine brings 102 units of affordable housing for veterans to a 1.4-acre campus on Commonwealth Avenue that represents Boston’s largest veterans’ development since World War II.

WinnDevelopment led the $46-million project, which combined a new six-story building with an adapted historic structure to create 11 studio apartments, 47 one-bedroom units, 33 two-bedrooms and 11 three-bedroom homes. Funding sources included MassHousing, the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, Boston’s Department of Neighborhood Development and Bank of America, which provided a $31 million construction loan and is investing more than $24 million of private tax credit equity.

The Boston Housing Authority partnered with Brighton Marine, Boston Veterans’ Services, VA Boston Healthcare and nonprofit Soldier On to provide housing and supportive services under the federal Veterans Supportive Housing program.

Designed by The Architectural Team of Chelsea, the project features large sawtooth-style bays, a central courtyard, wellness office, gymnasium and theater room.

“The Residences at Brighton Marine is far more than just a housing development: It represents a commitment to the long-term success of our veterans and their families. By combining critical transitional support with high-quality apartment homes for both low income and middle-income veterans in a central urban location, this project demonstrates the benefits of access to a broad range of networks, including jobs, transportation, entertainment and services.” — WinnCompanies CEO Gilbert Winn
