What: The Foundry
Where: 101 Rogers St., Cambridge
Owner: Cambridge Redevelopment Authority
Built: 2019-2022

A 131-year-old East Cambridge property that has a history as a factory, taxi barn and office space is reopening this fall as a new community hub.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled this week for The Foundry, originally the home of the Blake and Knowles Steam Pump Co. The adaptive reuse project, designed by CambridgeSeven architects, includes space for visual and performing arts, entrepreneurship, technology and workforce education.

A new sculptural entry leads visitors into an interior atrium, and a steel and metal-clad addition complements the historic masonry shell.

The $46 million project will open to the public this fall, providing opportunities for underrepresented communities to access Kendall Square’s economy.

They Said It:

“The Foundry is a visionary community building; the mix of programming and the community-based mission represent an exceptional civic investment in arts and culture and make this one of the most unique projects our firm has designed in our 60 years of practice.”
