Mayor Thomas M. Menino recently announced the installation of solar panels at his home in Hyde Park, to be completed by Boston-based Atlantic Power and Light and two co-op students from Madison Park High School.
Menino was one of 116 Boston homeowners who elected to go solar through the now completed Solarize Mass-Boston program, which ran this past summer.
"Solarize Mass-Boston has been an amazing success, increasing access to clean energy for many of our residents," Menino said in a statement. "We will build off this success and continue to build and develop programs to help residents and businesses go green and save money."
SolarCity partnered with IBEW Local 103 to have local contractors and students complete the installation on the Mayor’s home. IBEW Local 103 Electrical Union runs a co-op program every year with 8-10 students from Madison Park to work with and be trained by Licensed Electricians.
The installation consisted of a 3.38kW system with 13 260-watt solar panels. Menino put $500 down and can expect to see his electrical bill drop by more than $16 a month or about $197 per year.
The four-month Solarize Mass-Boston program, which concluded on Nov. 4, was a partnership between the city of Boston, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources to make solar more accessible and affordable for Boston homeowners.
